Disagreement can be a source of insight and innovation—or a source of stress and drama. In this talk, Julia Minson AB ’99, professor of public policy at Harvard Kennedy School and a leading expert on the psychology of disagreement, will share insights from her new book, How to Disagree Better (Penguin Random House, March 2026). Drawing on decades of cutting-edge research, Professor Minson will offer concrete, evidence-based strategies for improving conversations across disagreement in the workplace, among family members, and in civic life. During the session, participants will have the chance to receive feedback on their own level of receptiveness to opposing views and engage in a live Q&A with Professor Minson.

Prior to the session, you are welcome to take the receptiveness survey to reflect on during the talk . To access and utilize the survey:

  • Visit disagreeingbetter.com/survey

  • Complete the survey

  • Download your personalized report as a PDF and have it available during the session

Professor Minson is the founder of Disagreeing Better, LLC. — a behavioral science consulting firm that offers speaking and training on effective management of disagreement and conflict. As a decision scientist, Julia’s research interests include conflict management, negotiations, and judgment and decision making. Her main line of research addresses the “psychology of disagreement” – How do people engage with opinions, values, and judgments that conflict with their own? Full bio.

The Speakers Bureau Spotlight series is part of the HAA Speakers Bureau program, a Harvard tradition of connecting alumni communities with faculty speakers. Spotlight programs will take place periodically throughout the year and are open to all Clubs, SIGs, and Contacts.
